mimi fishman

Miriam "Mimi" Fishman (the mother of Jon Fishman, drummer for the band Phish) was diagnosed with glaucoma as a teenager. Mimi spent many years educating the public regarding the value of testing for glaucoma at an early age, to give treatment a much better chance of having a positive affect rather than if the glaucoma was developed at a later stage.

Over many years, Mimi had spread the word about glaucoma awareness by publicly speaking and educating audiences at various functions. More recently, through the creation of The Mimi Fishman Foundation, we've continued to help her spread the word.

Many of you will remember Mimi as the vibrant woman, proudly displaying her "Phish Parent" All Access laminate, and dancing at the side of the stage (or in several cases, on the stage) at Phish shows. "It seems like one big family when I meet the fans. They always want me to stay and dance with them during the show." Her openness and positivity made Mimi Fishman more than the mother of a musician to fans; it made her a member of the community and a friend to humanity.*

"The kind of woman who would turn her own birthday celebration into an event that helped others, she involved other bands in the jam scene ó including moe., String Cheese Incident, Ominous Seapods, Aquarium Rescue Unit and Widespread Panic ó in her charity work, as well."*

She was passionate about music, loved art, animals (especially her cat, Valentine), botanicals, and Cherished her family. Mimi has three children - two sons, David and Jon; and a daughter, Julie.

We are sorry to inform you that Mimi passed away on Tuesday, January 16th, 2001 in Syracuse, New York. Her love for everyone will continue to flourish for years to come. She had such a positive attitude towards life and believed in the expression of free thought, and jumped at any opportunity that involved helping others. Mimi touched the heart and souls of many and is dearly missed.

Contributions and donations can be made in Mimi's Honor, to the Foundation. Please visit The Mimi Fishman Foundation's contact page for the address.
